Southern Utah University Spring 2021 – Randall Jones Theatre

This show was a filmed and live streamed during the Covid-19 pandemic. For this production I was tasked with curating a soundscape through my own compositions. The biggest difficulty when designing this show was balancing the fact that we were doing two different versions while trying to keep the technical elements as similar as possible between the two different show styles. This was because the show was used as a psychological experiment testing how well an audience perceives a show in a realistic vs an avant garde style.

Low Drone

Two low dissonant notes used to create a sense of unease during the “doctor” scenes.

Dissonant Tones

A two part harmony that moves in and out of a dissonant state to create a sense of evolving tension.

Chatter

I recorded the performers and overlapped the tracks as to create chatter specific to the show.

Writing Theme

A musical motif that builds as the main character “I” writes in their journal throughout the show.

Scene 19

As “I” has their biggest break down this music accompanies the movement based motifs.

Jazz

A piece of jazz music used in a poetry cafe where “I” is sharing their writings.
